Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

Why Berkeley Residents Choose Us for HeatShield Service
Most chimney companies in Berkeley can sweep a flue. Fewer can look at a HeatShield CeCure reline that’s starting to show its age and tell you whether the ceramic sleeve is failing or whether the real problem is a crown that was never re-coated. We reline Berkeley’s older clay-tile flues with HeatShield because it’s a cast-in-place ceramic resurfacing system that restores an undersized or spalled flue from the inside without a full masonry tear-out, and we service existing HeatShield systems the same way we’d want our own flues handled: scope first, recommend only what the camera shows, and use genuine HeatShield materials when liner work is actually needed. Noel Castruita leads the crew, and he spent his early years in Sea Cliff learning how fog and salt air behave around masonry and metal before he ever picked up a chimney brush. That background matters when we’re diagnosing why a Berkeley Hills flue keeps glazing over even after a sweep.
We’re an independent shop. We are not authorized, sponsored, or endorsed by HeatShield. That independence is the point: when we tell you a reline isn’t necessary and a repoint-plus-cap will do, there’s no brand quota behind the recommendation. Our HeatShield sales & service work spans Berkeley service area calls from the flatlands up into the WUI zones, and we stock the HeatShield compounds and CeCure sleeves we use most often so a Berkeley job doesn’t stall waiting on a distributor.

Common HeatShield Chimney Cleaning Problems We Solve in Berkeley
- Glazed creosote trapped behind an older CeCure reline. Berkeley’s cool foggy summers keep some households burning year-round, and in coastal-fog homes we regularly find third-degree creosote that glazed over because the flue never fully cooled between fires. If a previous contractor relined over a flue that wasn’t swept to bare clay first, that glaze is now trapped behind the new sleeve. We remove what we can reach and document the rest with a camera before recommending anything further.
- Resurfacing compound debonding from wet or sooted original clay tile. HeatShield’s Resurfacing Compound bonds poorly to a flue that was damp or dirty at install. Berkeley’s wet winters are hard on chimneys that sit idle for months, and Hills homes that went unlined through a rainy season sometimes show exactly this failure mode: the compound lifts away from the original tile in sheets.
- Woodpecker and squirrel damage wicking moisture into the liner. In the Berkeley Hills, uncapped chimneys collect woodpecker holes and squirrel nests faster than most owners expect. A HeatShield-lined flue paired with an uncapped crown lets that debris and moisture track down behind the sleeve and degrade the insulation backfill. We pull the nest, sweep the flue, and re-cap the crown before the liner takes more damage.
- Cracked crowns letting water behind the HeatShield sleeve. A reline doesn’t fix the crown above it. Relined flues whose original crown was never re-coated develop cracks that let water track down behind the sleeve and spall the surrounding brick. In Berkeley’s older Craftsman and Tudor stock, that crown is often original to the 1920s or 30s and well past due.
- Undersized relines that strangle the draft. Some HeatShield relines in Berkeley were sized for the original fireplace opening, not for the wood stove or insert that came later. The result is a flue that’s too narrow, a draft that pulls weakly, and smoke that rolls back into the room. We re-scope, verify the measurements, and recommend a re-size only when the camera shows the mismatch clearly.
HeatShield Service in Berkeley: What Local Conditions Mean for Your Equipment
Berkeley’s pre-war Hiller Highlands and Berkeley Hills homes sit squarely in the Wildland-Urban Interface, which means a chimney here isn’t just about creosote. The city’s WUI inspection program checks for spark arrestor compliance and ember-resistant venting, and that’s where HeatShield work intersects with local code in a way most pages miss: a cast-in-place reline narrows the flue opening, sometimes by enough that the spark arrestor cap you already have no longer seats correctly. You don’t find out until the inspection. We’ve seen this on Grizzly Peak and along Tunnel Road, where a previously compliant cap suddenly rocks loose because the reline changed the flue’s inner diameter. The fix isn’t a new liner; it’s re-sizing the cap to the new opening as part of the reline, not after the citation. That sequencing is the kind of thing a generic HeatShield page or a flatland sweep in Albany or Emeryville never has to think about, and it’s why we treat the cap as part of the liner job, not an add-on.
HeatShield Models & Products We Service in Berkeley
We work on the full HeatShield line: the CeCure Sleeve for cast-in-place flue relining, the Resurfacing Compound for cracks and spalling in existing flues, and the Heatseal Insulation Mix for backfill on insulated relines. We also handle custom flue-sizing for original clay-tile fireplaces, which matters in Berkeley’s older housing stock because the original tiles are often undersized for anything but an open hearth. For any liner work, we use genuine HeatShield CeCure sleeve and Resurfacing Compound. Off-brand cast-in-place compounds don’t carry the same ceramic chemistry, and we won’t gamble a Berkeley flue on them. For crowns, caps, dampers, and firebox brick we use quality aftermarket parts matched to the flue, and we tell owners honestly when a HeatShield reline isn’t needed and a repoint-plus-cap will do. Level 2 inspection, cap installation, and crown coating are part of the same visit whenever the scope calls for them.

AfterHeatShield Service Pricing in Berkeley
HeatShield chimney cleaning in Berkeley typically runs $249 to $399 for a standard sweep with camera inspection, depending on flue condition and access. A full reline with CeCure sleeve runs higher because it’s a different job: cast-in-place ceramic work, not a brush-and-go. Crown coating adds to the total when the scope shows it’s needed, and so does re-sizing a spark arrestor cap after a reline changes the flue opening. Your free estimate includes the camera look, so you’ll see exactly what we see before any number goes on paper. Call (833) 593-0743 and we’ll get you scheduled.

FAQs – HeatShield Chimney Cleaning in Berkeley
It can. A cast-in-place reline slightly narrows the flue opening, and if your existing spark arrestor cap was sized to the original clay-tile diameter, it may no longer seat properly after the reline. In Berkeley’s WUI inspection zones, a loose or undersized cap is a compliance issue. We re-size the cap as part of the reline so it’s right before the inspector ever looks at it. Call (833) 593-0743 for a scope and cap check.
Yes. Birds and squirrels in an uncapped flue are a regular call for us in the Berkeley Hills. We pull the nest out, sweep the flue to bare clay, then scope it for cracks, spalling, or undersizing before recommending whether a HeatShield reline is actually necessary. In a 1920s Tudor bungalow up in the Hills, our tech pulled a squirrel nest and a fist-sized woodpecker hole out of an uncapped clay flue before we could even scope it, then found the original tiles cracked and undersized for the insert – similar to issues we’ve resolved with HeatShield in Chinatown and other Bay Area neighborhoods. We swept it, ran a CeCure reline sized to the insert, and finished with a properly seated multi-flue spark arrestor cap and a crown coating so the WUI inspection would pass. The homeowner called back in the fall saying the draft was stronger than it had been in years.
That’s the whole point of the system. HeatShield is a cast-in-place ceramic resurfacing that bonds to the inside of the existing flue, so there’s no masonry tear-out and no structural demo. The catch is prep: the original clay tiles have to be swept to bare clay and completely dry before the compound goes on. Berkeley’s wet winters mean we sometimes have to let a flue dry out for a few days before we can apply the reline properly. If the tiles are spalled beyond what the compound can bond to, a CeCure sleeve may be the better route, and we’ll show you the camera footage behind the recommendation.
It helps, but it’s not a cure by itself. Berkeley’s coastal fog keeps flue surfaces cool and damp, and damp flues glaze creosote faster than dry ones. A properly installed HeatShield liner with the Heatseal insulation backfill reduces the moisture penetrating the flue wall, which slows the glazing cycle. But if the crown is cracked or the cap is missing, water still gets in from the top and the glazing returns. We’ll address the liner and the crown together, because fixing one without the other just moves the problem around. Call (833) 593-0743 and we’ll scope it and show you where the moisture is actually entering.
Yes. Crown coating and flashing repair are standard parts of a proper reline, not separate upsells. A reline that leaves a cracked crown above it is a reline that will fail from the top down. We coat the crown, replace damaged flashing, and install or re-size the cap at the same time as the liner work so the whole system goes back together water-tight. If the flashing is fine, we’ll tell you that too. The camera doesn’t flatter, and we’d rather show you exactly what’s there.
